How to Open and Read Your Instagram Data Download
Instagram gives you an official data export, but it lands as a pile of ZIP parts, folders, HTML pages, JSON files, and media paths. DataUnpacker turns the supported parts into something you can actually explore: an inbox, follower lists, activity timelines, saved content, ads, account history, and a private recap.
Quick answer
Request your Instagram information from Meta Accounts Center, choose the broadest export options if you want the fullest result, then drop the ZIP file, ZIP parts, or extracted folder into the Instagram viewer. DataUnpacker reads HTML and JSON exports locally in your browser and shows the sections that are present in that export.
Request the fullest export you can
Instagram's download flow lives in Meta Accounts Center under the privacy or information settings. The exact menu wording changes, so treat any guide that promises permanent button names with suspicion.
For the richest DataUnpacker result, choose all available information and all time when Instagram offers those choices. HTML and JSON are both supported, so the default HTML option is fine.
- Use an official Instagram or Meta export, not a login, scraper, or live API connection.
- Pick all available information if you want messages, followers, activity, saved items, ads, settings, and account history.
- Pick all time if you want follower comparisons and old activity to be less misleading.
- If Instagram splits a large export into several ZIP files, keep all of the parts together.

Once the download arrives, go to the Instagram viewer and choose the ZIP file. If Meta sent multiple ZIP parts, select them together. If you already extracted the archive, you can choose the folder or drop it onto the upload panel.
The viewer reads the data files in a background worker. DM photos, videos, voice notes, and post previews can be shown from your own uploaded ZIP when those files are present, but the viewer does not need your Instagram password.
What you can look through
The interesting part is not the file tree. It is the patterns hiding inside it. The Instagram viewer can turn your export into a searchable inbox, people rankings, activity charts, saved posts and collections, account changes, login history, ad categories, Threads rows, settings, and a coverage report that says what was missing or empty.
- Messages: conversations, search, filters, DM media, best friends, streaks, calls, reactions, and busiest times.
- Connections: followers, following, mutuals, who does not follow you back, and who you do not follow back.
- Activity: likes, comments, story interactions, searches, link history, and top accounts.
- Content: posts, stories, reels, archived items, saved posts, collections, and insights where Meta includes them.
- Account and ads: logins, devices, profile changes, ad interests, advertisers, and off-Meta activity rows.
Keep the nosiness private
This is your own export, so DataUnpacker shows the data back to you when privacy mode is off. The risk is usually not that you can see your own messages. The risk is someone else seeing your screen.
Use privacy mode before sharing screenshots or screen recordings. It masks names, messages, captions, searches, emails, IPs, locations, device IDs, and outside links while keeping the shape of the stats visible.
Fun things to try
- Search a word you used constantly years ago and see which conversations it lived in.
- Open the messaging habits section and find your busiest month, peak hour, longest streak, and top one-to-one chat.
- Check who you engage with but do not follow, and who you follow but never seem to interact with.
- Look at saved posts and collections as a tiny archive of old taste.
- Run the recap cards for a year and see whether it matches the version of that year in your head.
Limits to remember
- Follower comparisons are a snapshot of the export, not live Instagram.
- A date-limited export can make lists and timelines look emptier than they really are.
- Deleted or unavailable DMs cannot be recovered if Instagram did not include them.
- Some rare sections are parsed from known export shapes but still need more real-world examples.
