Facebook Data Viewer

Open the export from Meta's Download your information and see what it holds: your Messenger chats with their photos and videos, who you talk to most, your posts, friends, groups and searches, the apps and advertisers that have your data, and your login history.

This preview reads your files locally in your browser.

HTML and JSON exports both work, and so do both together.

Multi-part exports work when every ZIP is selected together.

Chat photos, videos and voice notes show inline, from your own files.

Facebook export reader

HTML or JSON, one ZIP, several parts, or the extracted folder

Drop your Facebook export

Select every ZIP part from the same request together. HTML and JSON both work.

Waiting for a Facebook export. This reader looks for Messenger chats and their media, posts, comments, friends, groups, searches, off-Facebook activity, ads and logins. Try demo opens a made-up export instead.

A missing ZIP part means missing sections, with no error shown. Coverage lists what was found.

How to get your Facebook data

  1. 1

    Open Download your information

In Meta's Accounts Center: Your information and permissions, then Download your information. In the app it is under Menu, Settings & privacy, Settings, Accounts Center.

  2. 2

    Choose Download or transfer information

Pick your Facebook profile, then All available information. Specific types of information works too, with fewer sections.

  3. 3

    Choose Download to device

Set Date range to All time. Format can be HTML or JSON, both work here. A lower Media quality makes a smaller download.

  4. 4

Create files and wait for Meta's email

It can take minutes or a few days. Meta asks for your password before the download starts.

  5. 5

    Bring every ZIP part here

Large exports come in several ZIPs. Select all of them together, no need to extract them.

End-to-end encrypted Messenger chats may be left out of this export. Messenger downloads those separately; see the questions below.

What you get

What the Facebook viewer shows

Messages

Every Messenger conversation in the export, searchable, with photos, GIFs, stickers, videos, voice notes and files inline, plus a Media grid you can filter by type, chat and sender.

Messenger insights

For each conversation: when it was busiest, how it moved month by month, who sent what share of the messages, and its mix of media and calls.

Activity

Your posts, comments and reactions, groups, pages and searches, each on a timeline with its most recent entries.

Connections

Friends and friend requests, plus the groups and pages you joined or followed, with when each one happened where the export says.

Off-Facebook activity and ads

Apps and websites that shared your activity with Meta, apps connected to your account, advertisers and the ad topics Meta assigned you.

Account and security

Logins, devices, sessions and account changes, as recorded in the export.

Archive and coverage

Every data file stays browseable, even sections without a summary yet, and Coverage shows what came through, what Meta marked empty and what couldn't be read.

FAQ

Facebook export questions

Should I download HTML or JSON?

Either works. JSON keeps exact times. HTML prints times as text without a time zone, so they're shown as printed. Selecting both exports together works too, and JSON is used where both have the same file.

Why is my export in several ZIP files?

Meta splits large exports into parts. Select every ZIP from the same request together, or extract them into one folder and choose that folder.

Some of my Messenger chats are missing. Why?

Messenger chats are end-to-end encrypted by default now, and Download your information can leave encrypted chats out. Messenger has a separate download for those under Privacy & safety, End-to-end encrypted chats, Message storage. This viewer reads the Download your information export, not that one.

Some sections are empty. Is something wrong?

Meta marks categories you have no data in as empty, and choosing Specific types of information or a shorter date range leaves out the rest. Coverage lists what the export contained.

Does it show my photos and videos?

Photos, GIFs, stickers, videos, voice notes and files from your chats load from your own files as you scroll. Photos from posts and your profile are counted but not shown yet. With privacy mode on, no media loads.

Why doesn't it show which messages are mine?

The export lists everyone in a chat by name but doesn't mark which one is you, so the viewer shows each sender by name rather than guessing.

My download has both Facebook and Instagram in it. Does that work?

Yes. The Facebook part is read here and the Instagram part is skipped. Open the same files in the Instagram viewer to see that side.
